A Brief Tip on Tuna
One of my new favorite blogs, The Sweet Beet, is ripe with food facts to eat and live by. The writer, Michelle, is chock-full of knowledge about everything from which oils are best to cook with (hint: my fave, olive oil, is actually not the best choice), to a breakdown of facts about grass-fed beef.
A few weeks ago I read her post titled, “Are you eating the tuna that’s 3x higher in mercury?” and have since changed my canned-tuna tune. In a nutshell, what I always thought was the better quality variety, solid white albacore, is actually higher in mercury than chunk light! The science behind that is that as you move up the food chain through larger animals, any chemical toxins increase as well. So, since albacore is the largest type of tuna, the levels of mercury is 3x higher in them. I’ve since made the switch to chunk light, and so goes another small step toward immortality.
